The story
Why oohwhat! exists
It started with that tiny pause when a parcel lands on the mat. You don't know what's inside. You just know someone, somewhere, wrapped it up and sent it on purpose. That little ooh, what?! is the whole point.
I like doing something with my hands. The trouble is, my house is overflowing — and I bet a lot of people have the same problem. Drawers of almost-finished bits, shelves of things you were proud of and then didn't quite know what to do with. It felt a shame for all that work to just sit there.
I also wanted a way to discover new talents and give small creators a chance — people who might never have a shop window, but who make something you'd actually be glad to unwrap.
We've all heard about failed Secret Santas. Or the special occasion where nothing turned up. Or those days you just feel a bit lonely. I thought it would be nice if a surprise could arrive for you anyway — and not only at Christmas.
Most swaps I found lived in Facebook groups and endless DMs. Addresses flying around. No real timeline. No one quietly checking that what was being sent was actually handmade, finished, and kind. It worked, sometimes. It also felt a bit like luck and chaos.
So I built OohWhat. A UK-only handmade mystery swap with a bit more care around it: photos before you're in, matches that aren't a straight swap back, addresses only when someone needs to post, and a dashboard so nobody gets forgotten.
It's still a one-person labour of love. I run it for fun, not as a shop. The Founding Swap has no platform fee — you only pay postage — because I wanted the first circle to be about makers finding each other, not about building a business overnight.
Make it. Wrap it. Send it. Then wait for the ooh.
